Excerpt from History of the Huguenot Emigration to America, Vol. 1

I have undertaken to narrate the coming of the perse outed Protestants of France to the New World, and their establishment, particularly in the seaboard provinces now comprehended within the United States. This movement and settlement took place principally at the time of the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes. But before that period, important emigrations had already occurred; emigrations to Acadia, or Nova Scotia, to Canada, to the French West Indies, and, by way of Holland, to the Dutch possession of New Netherland - now New York. And still earlier, the effort had been made by Coligny - unsuccessfully, indeed - to plant a colony and provide a retreat for the French Calvinists, first in Brazil, and afterward in Florida.

History of the Huguenot Emigration to America Vol 1 Classic Reprint Charles Washington Baird 9781332792948 Books

Written as one might expect for the 19th century; language a little dry, but full of good information for anyone interested in this subject. Very detailed and complete. I'm especially interested in the Huguenots from the La Rochelle area of France, and I wasn't disappointed. This book has something for everyone researching the discrimination and cruelty the Huguenots suffered, especially before, during, and after the Thirty Years' War.

I gleened a fair amount of information I needed from this book. The only thing is that it's written so stiffly, because it was written long ago. I was dissappointed it didn't include later dates, so I will have to order vol. 2 for more info. It is a detailed account of the emigration, even naming families. I would have loved to know the exact dates it covered, because for what I need, I would have ordered vol. 2 instead.
Essential for those just learning their heritage.
